NLD Community Service: The New Lawyers Division Has Been Busy Serving The Atlanta Community

By Cale Brice

The most important thing we can do as lawyers is lead by example, and that starts with service. It has been an honor chairing the New Lawyers Division over the past two years. I have had the pleasure of working with an incredible team of young lawyers who are dedicated to making each community service event impactful, special, and memorable.

Next, with the inspiration of the modern Disney classic “Frozen,” the NLD organized a very special holiday party for children at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. NLD members dressed up as all of the characters from the hit Disney movie “Frozen.” Led by board members Rebecca Sapp Nguyen and Caroline McGlamry, the children enjoyed fun activities such as face painting, a photo booth, arts and crafts, and photo-ops with the characters from Frozen. The party included gourmet pizza, juice boxes and treats for both the children and their parents to enjoy.

We kicked off this year with the NLD’s second annual book drive. The book drive idea was brought to the NLD by board member Bethaney Embry. Embry did some research and discovered that Douglas County Juvenile Court Judge Peggy Walker pioneered a book program designed to empower children and young adults grappling with the juvenile court system. Over the course of the year, with the generous support of GTLA’s members, the NLD collected hundreds of books. The NLD was especially humbled by champion members Alan Hamilton and Jeff Shiver, of Shiver Hamilton, LLC, who donated a staggering $2,000 worth of books to the program. The enormously successful book drive garnered the attention of Judge Walker, and the court contacted the local newspaper to share the contributions of the NLD. In early 2018, the NLD, members of GTLA’s executive committee, Alan Hamilton, and Executive Director Emily Hurt will personally donate the books and will be featured by the local newspaper. A huge thank you to everyone that donated to this wonderful program!

The Boys and Girls Club Event, to be held sometime in 2018, welcomes all GTLA and NLD members to join the NLD board at the John H. Harland Boys and Girls Club location. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a myriad of activities with the children from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Harland facility has everything from arts and crafts, sports, and even a science center where children conduct experiments and much more. Please be on the lookout for upcoming emails with more information and sign-up to join us. The children are excited to engage in fellowship with lawyers in the community.

NLD’s own foodies and part-time “chefs,” Rebecca Sapp Nguyen and Sheila Bilimoria, will head up the event at Ronald McDonald House. The plan is to spend quality time, fellowship and cook up some special treats for the families to enjoy. All GTLA and NLD members are invited to join this special event. Stay tuned for upcoming emails on details to join the NLD board members at the Ronald McDonald House later in 2018.

Our originally planned feed the hungry event at the Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center for the 2017 holidays, headed up by NLD Board Member Jed Douglas, was postponed and will be rescheduled for 2018. The Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center provides emergency assistance to Southwest Atlanta citizens facing crisis. SWEEAC is driven by the goal of empowering every family with the tools to once again be self-sufficient, productive and contributing members of society. SWEEAC serves more than 13,000 residents, with approximately 250,000 pounds of food being distributed every year. The NLD is truly looking forward to this special event in 2018 and would love for all GTLA members to join us. Spots fill up quickly, so please sign-up as soon as you see the emails floated.

Thank You and See You Soon!
The NLD Board members and I truly look forward to seeing all GTLA and NLD members at the upcoming community service events in 2018. We all understand how precious each and everyone’s time is and appreciate every attendee that joins us throughout the year. A heartfelt thank you to all of you who have contributed their support in the past years. We hope to see all of you soon! ●
